Exploring weak magnetic fields with LOFAR and SKA
نویسنده
چکیده
Regular magnetic field structures can be derived from the Faraday rotation measures (RM) of polarized background sources observable at 1.4 GHz with the SKA. At lower frequencies (< 250MHz) polarimetry of radio sources with the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR) will allow the investigation of extremely small RM, to detect and map weak regular fields in halos and outer parts of spiral galaxies, and in the interstellar and intergalactic medium. Very little is known yet about the number density of polarized sources at low frequencies. Observed distributions of polarized sources at 350 MHz and 1.4 GHz and perspectives to detect weak magnetic fields with LOFAR are presented. Test observations of polarized radio sources with the Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope (WSRT) and the Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) are discussed.

Magnetic Visions: Mapping Cosmic Magnetism with Lofar and Ska
The origin of magnetic fields in the Universe is an open problem in astrophysics and fundamental physics. “Cosmic Magnetism” has been accepted as Key Science Project both for the Low Frequency Array (LOFAR, under construction) and the planned Square Kilometre Array (SKA). At low frequencies LOFAR and SKA will allow to map the structure of weak magnetic fields in the outer regions and halos of g...
متن کاملMagnetic fields in nearby galaxies: prospects with future radio telescopes
The origin of magnetic fields in the Universe is an open problem in astrophysics and fundamental physics. Our present-day knowledge is limited to regions of strong magnetic fields and to starforming disks of galaxies. Cosmic-ray electrons emitting at high (GHz) radio frequencies can propagate only a few kpc from their places of origin due to their lifetime limited by energy losses. Low-energy e...
متن کاملTesting the magnetic field models of disk galaxies with the SKA
The future new-generation radio telescope SKA (Square Kilometre Array) and its precursors will provide a rapidly growing number of polarized radio sources. Hundred and thousands polarized background sources can be measured towards nearby galaxies thus allowing their detailed magnetic field mapping by means of Faraday rotation measures (RM). We aim to estimate the required density of the backgro...
متن کاملRadio-Emission from Cosmic Ray Air-Showers - A Theoretical Perspective for LOPES
High-energy cosmic ray air-showers have been known for over 30 years to emit strong radio pulses in the regime between a few and several 100 MHz (Allan 1971). To date, however, a thorough analysis of the emission mechanisms has not yet been conducted. Adopting a simplified shower geometry and electron-positron energy distribution, we calculate theoretical pulse spectra in the scheme of synchrot...
متن کاملAn MHD Gadget for cosmological simulations
Various radio observations have shown that the hot atmospheres of galaxy clusters are magnetized. However, our understanding of the origin of these magnetic fields, their implications on structure formation and their interplay with the dynamics of the cluster atmosphere, especially in the centers of galaxy clusters, is still very limited. In preparation for the upcoming new generation of radio ...
